Mellody’s Expertise
Mellody is General Manager and Head Cheerleader, responsible for management, strategic planning and growth for all areas of the firm. Additionally, she chairs the board of the company’s publicly traded mutual funds. Mellody joined Ariel in 1991 and spent nearly two decades as Ariel’s President before becoming Co-CEO. Mellody owns minority stakes in the NFL’s Denver Broncos, MLB’s Chicago White Sox and League One Volleyball. In 2021, she cofounded Ariel Alternatives, LLC, and helped launch its inaugural private equity fund, Project Black® to scale sustainable minority-owned businesses. Beyond Ariel, Mellody serves as a director of JPMorgan Chase and is the former chair of Starbucks Corporation and its current lead independent director. Mellody was a long-standing board member of the Estée Lauder Companies and former chair of the board of DreamWorks Animation, overseeing its sale in 2016. She is deeply committed to philanthropy and is a well-known advocate of financial literacy. In 2024, Mellody published a New York Times bestselling children’s book, Priceless Facts about Money. She earned her AB from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.

Managing Partner and Head of Investments
Jason’s Expertise
As Managing Partner and Head of Investments, Jason is the quarterback of Project Level®, responsible for deal sourcing and execution while also overseeing due diligence, portfolio management and value creation. Jason previously served as President of the Washington Commanders—the first Black president in the 105-year history of the National Football League (NFL), the youngest during his tenure, and only the fourth former NFL player to serve in that role. At the Commanders, he was responsible for all business operations, helped secure development rights to the RFK stadium site, and helped facilitate the team’s sale at a record high. Prior to the Commanders, Jason was a partner in McKinsey & Company. He spent seven years as a running back in the NFL and served as team captain and NFLPA player representative for the Arizona Cardinals. Jason holds a BA in psychology from Northwestern University where he was an Academic All-American student-athlete and a two-time All-Big Ten football selection. He earned an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Vice President
Asrat’s Expertise
Asrat is responsible for sourcing and executing investment opportunities, conducting due diligence and managing portfolio companies. Before joining the firm, Asrat was the Chief of Staff at the Washington Commanders, where he played a pivotal role across high-priority projects, including ongoing professionalization of the business and the planning of a new stadium project. During his tenure, the Commanders successfully transitioned to a new ownership group, renovated their stadium, onboarded fresh football leadership, passed a bill in Congress and the Senate supporting new stadium goals and secured a new stadium rights deal.
Prior to that role, Asrat was a consultant at McKinsey & Company (McKinsey), where he advised on growth strategy and transformation initiatives within the media, sports retail and private equity industries. Additionally, he played an instrumental role in McKinsey’s sports practice, contributing to efforts like analyzing Gen Z sports fan behavior and exploring the future of college sports. Born and raised in Ethiopia, Asrat graduated from Stanford University with a BS in human biology and an MS in management science and engineering.

Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer
and General Counsel, Ariel Investments and Project Level®
Emma’s Expertise
Emma serves as Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel and Board Secretary where she runs interference for Ariel Investments and its subsidiaries. As a member of the Operating Committee, Emma works closely with the Co-CEO and President on all administrative, operational, and business strategies along with other governance matters. Prior to Ariel, Emma served as general counsel, chief compliance officer, and board secretary at LGIM America, a $220 billion asset management firm. She also was general counsel at Mesirow Advanced Strategies. A former partner in the investment management practice of the law firm Faegre Drinker, she began her career at Sidley Austin LLP. Emma is an independent director of First Bank Chicago She is a founder and board member of Angeles Investors, a Latino-focused angel investing group. She serves on the board of Chicago television stations WTTW as well as the Chicago classical music station WFMT. A native of Puerto Rico, Emma graduated summa cum laude with a BA in international business from Saint Louis University and earned her JD from the University of Chicago Law School.
